Wei Ling Xian
Clematidis Radix, Clematis
Dosage
The decoction is orally taken at a dose of 6-9g, or up to 30g for being choked by fish bone.
Toxicity
Prolonged exposure to protoanemonin can cause skin effervesce and mucosal hyperemia. It is easy for protoanemonin to polymerize into anemonin, which is a toxic component of Wei Ling Xian, and overdose of which can lead to poisoning.
Chemical Composition
Protoanemonin; Saponin; Hederagenin; Epihederagenin; Oleanolic acid; Aglycone; CP0-10, 2a, 3a, 7a, 8a, 9a, 10a, 2b and 3b.(1)
Precautions
1.Exercise caution when administering this herb to pregnant women and to patients with qi and blood deficiencies.
2.Adhere to recommended safe dosage to prevent herb poisoning.
Pharmacology
The IC50 values of complete clematis saponin (CCS) on the cells of in-vitro cultured Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC), S180 ascites carcinoma (S180A), and hepatic ascites carcinoma (HepA) are 242mg/ml, 193mg/ml and 130mg/ml, respectively. The tumor-weight-inhibiting rates of CCS at 0.25g/kg, 0.5g/kg and 1g/kg on transplanted sarcoma S180 in mice are 40.3%, 55.1% and 53.0%, respectively. These statistics suggest that Wei Ling Xian has anti-tumor effects. CCS (at 0.2g/kg, 0.4g/kg and 0.8g/kg) does not, however, seem to significantly affect mice's survival time from S180A.(2)
