However, as a person ages, sometimes they start avoiding foods like milk and cheese for various reasons, and making lifestyle choices that affect the health of their bones.

So, medical technology has come up with various procedures (for women especially) to check the health of their bones, and one such procedure is a calcium scan. Some people might wonder why women are more at risk for bone diseases such as osteoporosis. One main reason is because of calcium depletion that occurs with multiple pregnancies, or the onset of menopause.

In order to understand the need for various preventative scans such as that of a calcium scan, it is important to have a full understanding of what osteoporosis is. Specifically, osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when there is a severely low amount of calcium in the bones. The result is that the bones become so brittle that they can easily break.

A calcium scan determines the risk that a woman is at for osteoporosis. If the calcium scan determines that the woman has a severe calcium depletion, then the woman will need to take certain supplements and change her diet. The scan itself is performed as an outpatient procedure, and takes, on average about a half hour to complete. Provided that she is already in good health, after the scan the woman can resume regular activities.
