My new home has all the latest bells and whistles when it comes to HVAC. I've got a high efficiency radiant heating system along with a high velocity SpacePak cooling system. Now that it's January and the temperatures have finally dipped below zero I noticed some heating issues. I couldn't understand how a new home with great insulation was having trouble holding a comfortable temperature.

It finally dawned on me that I hadn't sealed off the cold air return or the supply lines to my AC system. When I finally realized my over sight the first thing I did was check to see if in fact there was a draft at these locations. To my amazement there was a SIGNIFICANT amount of cold air circulating throughout the system.

The SpacePak system actually comes with small little plugs used specifically for blocking the cold air during winter months. In fact, those plugs do more than stop cold air, they also prevent warm moist air from entering the ducts, condensating, and then raining down on your favorite piece of furniture or flooring. I also installed a piece of insulation inside the grille for the cold air return.

Now that I've winterized the supply and returns the house is holding a comfortable temperature much better now. If you're not sure how to do this to your system make sure to call your HVAC technician and get some advice or simply hire them to do the work for you. This simple home improvement project can save you a substantial amount on your heating bill this winter.

Most houses built today use common trusses that don't provide for attic space like older homes framed with traditional rafters. In a recent post, Creating Storage Room With Attic Trusses, I pointed out the benefit of using attic trusses to create inexpensive storage space. In order to take advantage of that newly gained space it's important to plan your duct work installation with your HVAC contractor.
